November 26, 2002Honorable George W. Bush, President
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W.
Washington D.C. 20500Dear President Bush:
It is my wish to encourage my government to strive vigorously to wage peace in Afghanistan. I wish to add my voice to those asking for much more effort toward reconstruction in that country.
It was my privilege to serve with Northwest Medical Teams in the Winter and again in the Spring of this year in and around Mazar-i-Sharif. I was pleased with the amount of humanitarian aid coming into the country at that time. As important or even more-so than the many lives saved by our and others effort was the hope and mutual appreciation created with the Afghan people. Most people in Northern Afghanistan at that time were glad Americans were there. No only did I become very attached to hurting peoples, but I do not want them to lose that hope in us. The vast majority of Afghans want peace and progress away from their suffering.
Certainly there are large obstacles such as the factional fighting in Afghanistan. May both our public plan and measurable action be to aggressively wage peace by forwarding the reconstruction of this country. Only then will our motives be tolerable to the many nations of this world.
President Bush, I do pray for you and also for President Karzai much.
Thank you for hearing my plea.
Sincerely,
Kenneth K. Magee, MD
