Garden - 2011. Great harvest this year. Pictures are here

Peace Supper: October 21st at 6 PM. It was in honor of National Food Day (Oct. 24th) and to celebrate our own Friends Garden Harvest. Our focus was on healthy affordable food that has been produced in a sustainable, and humane way. We spread the word to the neighborhood through our food pantry customers. Many came, and a great time of fellowship and wonderful food was enjoyed.

During March and April Faith is giving a series of reflections on Jesus' question
"Who DO PEOPLE SAY THAT I AM?"

During January and February we had some lively discussions on What Church Membership Means to Me. As a result of these discussions, Ministry and Care Committee will present an updated Membership Covenant to our Meeting.

Volunteer potluck: Feb. 20, 2011 - We honored all our volunteers for the food pantry, the PALM suppers, those who work in the garden and those who are so faithful in doing all the other jobs maintaining our facilities and making sure everything runs smoothly. A BIG THANK YOU to all our volunteers!

During the Christmas Season we collected gifts for several needy families in our neighborhood.

Our definitions of Love - During October, Faith is giving a series of messages: Reflections on Relationships and this our list of the meanings of Love - October 10, 2010

What's up with the Friends House? - January 26, 2010, we opened our Food Pantry see pictures.
On January 23, 2011 - We celebrated our first year of the Food Pantry. In 2010: 430 households incorporating 1,559 individuals, were served in our Panty

July 14, August 11, September 8, 2009 October 13, 2009, we participated in the PALM (Provide a Loving Meal) Program the Methodist Church and other groups are doing. This program was started last fall through the Methodist Church to feed those who need food in our neighborhood a free meal. They began doing it only one Tuesday each month, but now, with the help of other organizations, we hope to provide a meal a meal every Tuesday. Our Meeting is committed to do it the 2nd Tuesday of every month and our first time was July 14th. We had the help of the Methodists (showing us the way around their kitchen and dinning hall) and aided by folks from another group, the Home Church. We worked in shifts and all went very well, we discovered that we could cook for and serve almost 100 people. All in all a very rewarding experience.

Community Garden - Our children are planting seeds to be ready to plant in our community garden (as soon as weather permits). check Garden Camp - 2010 for pictures. It is off and running. We have some 30 children participating, its great fun!

Our garden for 2009 was a great success. See Garden-2009 for some great pictures of the Fairview Neighborhood's Kids Garden Camp and "SOME THINGS LEARNED SUMMER GARDENING AT FRIENDS HOUSE" (thanks to Cindy Prince for the photos and her insights). Also see the Garden Page for pictures of our 2008 garden. (Bill took these photos.)

Two of our families are leaving for adventures of their own. We will miss them very much.

Bill and Shari Burke took a cross-country journey from Klamath Falls to Niagara Falls, New York. It took about 3 months to make the trip, and collected stories from ordinary Americans along the way. They tried to discover some of the ways which the current economic situation has changed people’s lives and thinking, both in positive and difficult ways. They are very interested in how communities and individuals of faith are responding and how that response impacts their faith. They are calling this project "Listening Across America," and l sent us pictures of their journey which has been added to our webpage: Shari and Bill's Page
Follow stories on their blog: Listening Across America

We had a great potluck Sunday, June 14th, to honor and thank Bill and Shari for all that they mean to us. We sent them off with the memory of good food and a Quaker blessing! We also sent with them a "Minute" to introduce them to the Friends Meetings they will be visiting.

Doug and Kathy Bakke, and their children Duncan and Rowena have moved to New Zealand.
Doug has given Klamath Falls Friends Monthly Meeting great service. He has served in such capacities as Representative to our Yearly Meeting, Clerk of the Meeting, Clerk of the Stewardship and Education Committees, and teacher, particularly of Quaker history. He has also participated in vocal ministry, always bringing challenging messages. Doug is a deep thinker and scholar. In 2007 and 2008 he participated in a short term missions trip to Kenya, where he helped to construct part of the Kaimosi University campus. He has also ministered in music, playing recorder and bagpipes for our meeting. He has been an active participant in the wider community of Klamath Falls, as well.

Kathy has also been a long-standing member, and has participated in such things as a physician both in our local community and far beyond. She has taught Resident Physicians under Oregon Health and Sciences University, has done much direct patient care, and has been a leader in our local hospital and the Oregon Family Physicians organization.

Duncan and Rowena have been active and involved members of our children's ministries

Neighborhood Churches gathering - was in our meetinghouse Saturday, February 28th from 2-3 pm we shared some of the ways we are reaching out to meet needs within our community. It is our desire to create a deeper sense of connection to neighboring churches and perhaps better streamline our efforts.

Bread for the World - Have Faith. End Hunger
Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. We support them by operating our food pantry twice a month - we are making a difference in our community.

Our back garden is dedicated as a Peace Garden. It is also meant to be a memorial and for prayer requests for special needs. To create a visual reminder for this we are adding prayer flags to the peace garden. Pictures are posted here: Prayer Flags in the Peace Garden.

Our Peace supper on May 1, 2009 was a great success. We learned a lot about the issues involved concerning immigration. The documentary called FROZEN DREAMS produced by Emiliana Aguilar Reynoso, a Mayan Quiche from Guatemala, was shown. It shows the perspective of several mothers who were among the 160 people involved in the immigration raid at the Del Monte food production plant in Portland, Oregon in 2007. This documentary helps put a human face to this complex issue. We also featured a panel of guests including an immigration lawyer, a farmer, and a clergy person.

Nearly 350,000 illegal immigrants were arrested and deported in the past year. More than 10,000 of those were from Washington, Oregon and Alaska, an increase of more than 35 percent from the previous year. (The Oregonian, Sunday, April 12, 2009) Sadly, in many of these cases, families have been torn apart. Many illegal immigrants have left crushing poverty to come to the states in order to provide food and shelter for their families. Clearly, our current immigration system is broken and in need of reform.

Karen Oberst has written a book! But I Tell You, is available for sale in the lobby.

Playground: We now have a playground for the kids. A crew, headed by Tony Swan has been hard at work all summer building it and we dedicated it Oct. 2, 2005.
Pictures are here.

The Quaker Initiative to End Torture-QUIT - A talk was presented by John Calvi on Monday, Feb. 5th, 2007 6:30 - 8 PM. More information

Eyes Wide Open - Oregon exhibit was Sept. 30 - Oct 1. in our church parking lot - a very moving experience for all who attended.
