Minutes of Peace and Social Concerns Meetings
Minutes Peace and Social Concerns Committee
February 22, 2009
Present were: Kate Murphey, Tony Swan, Ken Magee, Faith Marsalli, Bill and Shari BurkeThe Interdenominational Tea was first on the agenda. Faith visited with Steve from the First United Methodist Church and he will be sending some representatives from that church. We received a letter from Sacred Heart Catholic Church that while they support the effort, they will be unable to attend on that date due to commitments of Lent. Faith will do a follow-up phone call later in the week to remind people. We will serve coffee, tea, and cookies upstairs; Tony will facilitate; Shari will take notes for distribution afterwards; and Bill will take a photo for the website. Faith will ask everyone if they have anything they would like her to share with the others when she does the follow-up phone calls. Prayer flag materials will be available so people can make on if they wish.
Immigration: Faith got in touch with Angel's lawyer in Bend, who felt it was OK for him to tell his story at a Peace Supper. She also said that she might be able to get some people who have been through the system to come and tell their stories. There may be a possibility of having some lawyers who have worked on this issue come and speak as well. Faith will be going to a workshop dealing with immigration issues in mid-March. We will aim for April 24th or May 1st as the date for our Peace Supper.
Food Bank Project: We will have nutritional supplement beverages like Boost or Ensure as our March item for collection. Ken and/or Kate will bring some in to show people and explain what it is. We decided that we might try to do a Food Bank tour in May, possibly with the children.
Quaker Bakers: What to fund with proceeds from Quaker Bakers this year? A water filter project is one option. There may be a possibility of funding an entire project by ourselves. Ken will look into this further. Bread for the World will also be on the radar screen and we will participate in a letter writing campaign on Mother's Day.
Fair Trade: Tony brought in a pamphlet from the American Friends Service Committee with various Fair Trade items available. We might try to have some more things available for the Peace Supper and Mother's Day.
Friends House/Property: Faith urged us to keep thinking about this issue. She likes to refer to it as the Friends Property in order to get beyond the idea of just the house. Bill will take photos of the house and property so people can see it.
