Minutes Peace and Social Concerns Committee
March 29, 2009
Present were: Kate Murphey, Tony Swan, Ken Magee, Faith and Sophia Marsalli, Bill and Shari Burke

Lots of outreach discussion appeared on the agenda this month. First off, we agreed that Kate and Faith would attend the informational meeting at the First United Methodist Church regarding the expansion of their community meals program. They would like to have people from other churches come into their facility and prepare meals so that they can expand from the current one Tuesday per month. The meeting will be held on April 26th and Kate and Faith will let us know what happens there.

The next Peace Supper will be held on May 1st. Angel (someone who has been through the system) will be able to attend, as will his lawyer. Someone will ask Marshall to come and speak about his experiences with this issue as a farmer. Tony will ask Jill to make a flyer. Because this is a big topic and Faith would like to invite Angel's band to play, we will extend the hours for the Peace Supper and it will be from 5:30-8:30. Faith also suggested that the church may be able to get the Mennonites, who presented a workshop that she attended in Canby recently, to come here and do a similar one. This would not be until the summer or later.

Bread for the World Offering of Letters-we will participate on Mother's Day. Shari took the book they provided and will bring it to the writers group. They will consider writing sample letters to provide people with an example to follow as they write their own letters.

Tony knows a young woman who is going on a mission trip to Malawi to do service projects with orphans. Ken will ask stewardship and the kids whether it would be OK to use the change in the donation jar for the purpose of helping her with the funding needed for the trip.

Food Bank Project: We will collect pet food for the food bank throughout the month of April.
