Minutes of Peace and Social Concerns Meetings
Minutes Peace and Social Concerns Committee
October 31, 2009
Present were: Jill Sebastian, Ken Magee, Tony Swan, Maureen Somers and Kate MurpheyMaureen presented an update on the Friends House and the work being accomplished to ready it for the Food Pantry. She let us know the cost of the projects underway and we suggested she check with Jo to make sure the funds are available. Otherwise we, as a committee gave Maureen the go ahead to contract with the flooring company and the electrician. We based this recommendation on our recollection from the preceding Meeting for Worship and Business discussion when we sensed it was the decision of the Meeting to proceed. As a group we decided on an inexpensive linoleum for the house, and that we as a meeting would do whatever prep work we were able and competent to do, in advance. We also felt we could capably put in the ?molding after the linoleum was laid.
Victoria has written a summary of the Friends decision to open a Food Pantry in conjunction with the Food Bank. She has delineated the cost of preparing the Friends House for this purpose. We will give this to Niki as requested as Niki is currently writing a grant for funding for various needs of the Food Bank and Pantries.
Maureen and Faith will be meeting with Niki to finalize the paperwork for our Food Pantry proposal.
Jill will again be organizing this months PALM supper. She is expecting a big turnout and says she is happy with the volunteer turnout.
The P&SC committee decided to take down the Torture Is a Moral Issue banner and display it again at a later time. We agree that this may increase the impact of the message.
Tony is submitting a proposal for funding for a joint garden project between the Friends Church and Fairview School for next summer.
We will continue to offer Fair Trade products for sale.
We decided on a budget request for 2010 for the P&SC Committee:
Peace Suppers $400.00
Helping Fund for the Community $500.00
