Minutes of Peace and Social Concerns Meetings
Minutes Peace and Social Concerns Committee
April 25, 2010
Present were: Ken Magee, Tony Swan, Faith Marsali, Kate Murphey and Jill SebastianWe are looking forward to a Peace Supper on May 21st, 6-8pm with Dr.Stephanie VanDyke sharing with us her story of working to start a clinic, The Engeye Clinic, in southern Uganda. Finalization of plans pending confirmation of dates with Stephanie.
Garden Camp plans are under way for a children's camp similar to last years, on Tuesday and Thursdays from June 22nd through July 23rd. We will again be working with OSU Extension Office. Volunteers will be needed to work with the children and others to plant and maintain the garden. Contact Ken or Faith if you are interested in more details or would like to volunteer.
Terry Morton will again take on the lead organization role early on.
Tony would like to organize a container carden planting event at Fairview. This may not be possible this year with the busyness of the end of the school year. Great idea and hopefully it will occur next year if not this year.
The Food Pantry has a beautiful sign designed by Jill. It now is displayed on the the Friend's House, announcing the food pantry and hours of operation.
At some point we would like to be able to sign people up for SNAP--food stamps, while they are visiting the pantry. This would be an excellent opportunity to help those entitled to this program to get enrolled.
The initial open training for food pantry volunteers will be May 13th, Tuesday, from 6-7:30. Beth and Faith have worked hard to plan a useful education event with the hopes that many will be able to volunteer and find their experience rewarding and fun. Please contact Faith if you plan to attend.
A meeting wide letter writing event in coordination with priorities established for this year by "Food For The World" will be next Sunday, May 2nd. The Meeting next Sunday will focus how we can act to put an end to hunger.
Faith will be sending out an email on Monday encouraging members to support Cinco De Mayo. We have been invited to join with others to walk behind the "Hands Are Not For Hurting Banner." Ken Magee plans to create his own sign to carry expressing his belief that we as Christains are called to be Good Samaritans.
PALM suppers are going great. Many are having great experiences meeting our Fairview and Downtown neighbors. Now, with the change of season, the menu had changed to Taco Salad. See Jill if you are interested in more information or would like to volunteer.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church has expressed a desire to join and help. Word is, they have 100 interested volunteers.
Our plans to schedule a neighborhood church meeting has been put on hold for the time being.
The Food Bank has let us know that they will support us if we are interested in having some sort of "party or event" to celebrate the opening of the food pantry and the 2nd season of the community garden. Something to consider.
Next meeting May 30th (probably)
