PEACE AND SOCIAL CONCERNS MEETING
APRIL 27, 2008
Attending the meeting were: Ken Magee, Faith Marsalli, Tony Swan, and Shari and Bill Burke
Quaker Bakers was first on the agenda. We decided to continue with it this year, but we hope to encourage more people from the meeting to get involved. To that end, we will be working on ways to articulate our reasons for doing Quaker Bakers more clearly. We would also like to see more information about the church on the table so people can get a sense that we are here and what we are about. We decided that we would send the proceeds from Quaker Baker sales to the scholarship fund being set up for future students of the university in Kaimosi, Kenya that Doug Bakke is helping to build.
The End Torture Month Banner was the next item under discussion. We all agreed that we would prefer to have the text read "Torture is a Moral Issue." We agreed to let Kate decide what size would be best.
The discussion turned next to the vegetable garden to be planted in the front yard of the Friend's House. Ken felt very strongly that with food issues becoming more and more problematic, it would be a good thing to encourage people to grow their own food. The garden would provide a good example. We agreed that it would be good to put a sign on the fence saying what the garden is for and the website address would be included on that. Bill will be documenting various stages of the process and those photos will go to Jan McClellan for inclusion on the website. We will probably donate the bulk of the food grown to the food bank, although some of it could be sold at the Quaker Baker table as well. Shari spoke to Karen Oberst to make sure that she was in favor of using the yard of the Friend's House in this way. She is very pleased because it is a good first step in doing something productive with the property, and issue she has been thinking about a great deal over the past few months.
Tony mentioned that he and Doug Bakke would be reweatherizing the playground equipment sometime this summer.
Faith asked about the Fairview Community Helping Fund. People agreed that they wanted to see it used in some way connected with people in the meeting. Also, everyone thought it would be a good idea if the kids were involved in deciding where the money goes and in counting it.
We then discussed the ongoing food drive. We all think it should be an ongoing project. This was the last week for donations of pasta and sauce. In May we will be collecting macaroni and cheese and tuna. We decided that in June we would collect peanut butter, jelly, and crackers. In July we will put out the call for various dry cereals. Tony will contact the food bank so they can come and pick up the pasta and sauce this week.
Finally, we discussed Peace Suppers and thought of some ways to proceed. Shari expressed interest in doing a talk later in the year on peacemaking in each of our lives. Tony thought perhaps Faith could solicit ideas from others in the meeting about potential presenters. Ken offered to get in touch with someone who runs an ecumenical faith-based program in which kids do work related to that of Habitat for Humanity.
