Minutes Peace and Social Concerns CommitteeO
May 30, 2010
Present were: Ken Magee, Faith Marsali, Kate MurpheyFriends Garden is getting started. Some plants are in the ground and a group planting opportunity is planned for Sunday June 6th, right after Meeting. Everyone is invited to participate. We will ask that people bring some snacking foods to enjoy during the planting.
Ken plans to raise the height of the fence surrounding the garden to protect from deer. Ant traps were planned recently.
The garden camp will begin on June 29th and run for 4 weeks, Tuesdays and Thursday from 10-12:30. Volunteers will be needed to help, working with the children and also with weekly watering and weeding. Sign-up sheets are located in the front of the Meeting House or those interested can speak with Jill or Ken.
The Torture Banner will be displayed beginning in June. We will need some volunteers willing to help hang it again this year. June is National Torture Awareness Month.
PALM suppers are doing well. Generally about #100 people are served dinner. Volunteers to prepare and clean up can sign up or speak with Jill. Everyone is invited come and enjoy a meal with others in our community.
The Food Pantry is going well. May was our biggest month yet in terms of people served, 114 with 28 boxes prepared for them. A repeat training will be held on June 15th in the evening. Those interested in attending may sign up or speak with Faith or Beth.
The Peace Supper went well. Next time we will also create a sign-up for clean-up. An Honorarium will be sent to Stephanie.
Many opportunities present themselves regularly to Faith, and through Faith to the P&SC Committee. We do not have the capacity to move forward on so many worthy and pressing needs in our world but recognize their importance. We discussed the importance or not becoming overwhelmed and not overwhelming the Meeting by taking on too many projects.
During the summer we have no Peace Suppers planned. We want to encourage the Meeting to spend time with family and loved ones. We respect the need to rest, restore and regenerate, to honor the Sabbath.
We do want to keep the Meeting informed of the Peace and Social Justice work that is going on among Friends and others both locally and globally. To this end we discussed regularly having a Peace Moment at the close of meeting to share information. Such information might include information about work that is happening through Northwest Yearly meeting, through the Friends Meeting in the Rogue Valley, etc.
Our next P&SC meeting will be on Sunday June 27th at 9am.
