Minutes of Peace and Social Concerns Meetings
Minutes Peace and Social Concerns Committee
January 29, 2012
In attendance:: Faith, Ken, Dan, Sofia, Jill, KatePALM suppers are going well. Jill did say that she would appreciate someone to help with the grocery shopping. She also shared that it is challenging purchasing a somewhat healthy dessert for an affordable price.
The Food Pantry has been very busy and running smoothly.
The garden is resting.
Jessamyn states that we are still waiting to hear about one of the grants she submitted. She is not too optimistic as she thinks they are not as likely to fund an institution (Church) based project. She expects to hear in April. Jessamyn states she would benefit from some help in researching sources for grants and also expertise from someone with more gardening experience.Dan and Deborah and Greg all have garden plots adjacent to their homes they hope to cultivate as community gardens. It was suggested that perhaps there might be benefit from a garden meeting involving everyone in the meeting involved in community gardening to share ideas and resources.
Fairview and Pelican Schools are awaiting word as to whether they might be closed in the coming years due to City School budgetary concerns. We wonder how we can support our community school. Faith will look into this and keep us up to date.
Andy responded to the news that Portland schools will now be open, on an equal basis, to counter military recruitment. He is in favor of students hearing their options other than military service. He favored a positive message drawing students to other alternatives. He also acknowledged that this is a difficult task in our economy. (Andy, please correct if I mis-stated your views.)
Ken has contacts with members of the Yearly Meeting who are and have been active in this realm and volunteers to investigate what is happening Meeting-wide on this issue.Dan brought up the suggestion of Gordon Crosby that one thing he would recommend to people working in communities and with community needs is to "befriend rich people." (Dan, perhaps you can make this more understandable than I have in this brief statement.)
Peace and social concerns is scheduled to meet again, Sunday, February 26, 2011
