Minutes of Peace and Social Concerns Meetings
Minutes - Peace and Social Concerns Meeting
June 29, 2008Present were: Shari and Bill Burke, Faith Marsalli, Ken Magee, and Kate Murphey
We began with a discussion of the Peace Supper which had been tentatively scheduled for September. It was decided to hold the supper on September 19 with details to be worked out later. The speaker will be Carol Imani who will talk about prison issues. Ken may also be inviting others who have experience working in the prison system in some way to participate.
The Food Bank was next on the agenda. We agreed to continue the food drive as it has been highly successful and the need is not going away anytime soon. Kate mentioned that Sprague River Friends Church is the site for free lunches for children and Ken pointed out that they also hold a community meal on a weekly basis. kate will find out whether they need any support for those activities. We decided to collect canned fruit in August and canned soup in September. We will also accept donations of garden produce throughout the summer.
We agreed to go ahead with the book sale. We moved the date to August 9th. All proceeds will go to the Kaimosi University Scholarship Fund.
We talked about what to do with the banner once June was over and we all agreed to leave it up through the summer months in an effort to keep awareness of torture in the public eye. On a related note, we will be putting a copy of the Declaration of Principles for a Presidential Executive Order on Prisoner Treatment, Torture, and Cruelty in the bulletin and a petition for people to sign in the entryway. We will also send a letter to the editor of the Herald and News regarding the banner and endorsing the declaration.
Kate wrote up criteria for the Helping Fund which were agreed to.
For the July 3rd Thursday, Quaker Bakers will have a larger poster to hang on the window of the Daily Bagel and hope to have shifts staggered a bit more. In June there were many people at the start of the evening.
Bill suggested that once the meditation garden blooms, he could take a photo and submit it to Jan who could then create a "quote page" where people could submit inspirational quotes.
Ken will follow up with Tony regarding the student who took the trip to Belize in the hopes that he will come and speak to people about what he did there so the children can have a sense of what the money they donated was used for.
Finally, we had received an email about a typhoon in the Philippines asking for help. If people feel led to contribute to this relief effort, donations can be made through World Vision or the Evangelical Friends Mission
It was agreed that in addition to being placed on the website, Shari would send minutes from each Peace and Social Concerns meeting to Faith, who will distribute them to the list via email. As always, if anyone has any comments, questions, or ideas, feel free to email Shari at
