Minutes - Peace and Social Concerns Meeting
August 31, 2008

present were: Kate Murphey, Ken Magee, Tony Swan, and Shari and Bill Burke

Peace Supper: The next Peace Supper will be September 19 from 6:30-8. We will begin with a simple supper of soup and bread and at 7. Carol Imani will begin her talk on prison issues. We will try to get a blurb in the paper on September 12 and 19th. There is a possibility we can get it into the "what's happening" section as well. Kate will look into some of the local issues.

Quaker Bakers and Book Sale: We will put the remaining books on tables at the Peace Supper and see if anyone is interested in taking any. We will have the donation jar there in case someone would like to donate something for whatever books they take. Shari will call the outreach person at the library to see if she would like to come and take any books. The rest will go to the Bookie Joint. It was agreed that the book sale was successful and those who came and bought books were excited to see such a thing. Several asked when it would be done again.
Quaker Bakers was another success story this summer. It is a good way to let the community know about the church and to educate them about various issues as we make information available about whatever organization is being supported through the Quker Baker proceeds. This information is an integral part of the process. As we get closer to next summer, we can revisit discussions regarding location, etc.

National Religious Coalition Against Torture (NRCAT): Kate has bumper stickers that say "Torture is a Moral Issue." She will place these on the table in the lobby and will have a donation envelope alongside. Tony and Ken felt that it would be best to remain endorsing members for now. Shari had earlier expressed the view in an email that because regular membership involved only small donations of money and time that it should be revisited at the next Meeting for Business and Worship in order to find out whether anyone is willing to spend an hour per month on this.

Food Bank: Sprague River Friends Meeting is doing well with their community suppers and breakfasts. Dinners typically have 25-40 attendees, while the breakfasts have 40-60 people. While they do not need any help at this time, they were grateful for our interest in what they are doing.

Fair Trade: West Hills Friends Friends Meeting orders fair trade products, which they sell to members at a monthly fair trade market. When Faith returns, we will discuss the possibility of selling things like fair trade couscous and olive oil.

Miscellaneous: Kate has discovered that there is a need for gleaners in the community and we will hold the possibility of organizing something in this area for next year. Kate passed around various pamphlets for us to look at. When Faith gets back, we will discuss immigration.

September food drive will be for canned and/or dried soup
